The Washingtonians

In September of 1923 Elmer Snowden's Washington Black Sox Orchestra landed a vi month gig at the Hollywood Club in Manhattan. Later on about three months the name of the grouping was shortened to the Washingtonians and because of a disagreement over money, banjoist Snowden was forced out of the band and Duke Ellington was elected every bit the new leader.

Ellington and the band connected to play at the club until January of 1925 when the place was closed for repairs. Trumpeter Bubber Miley was the chief attraction in the group and gave it its unique sound, with his utilize of the plunger mute. The way which featured Miley'south growling, drunken, wah-wah trumpet playing was called the "jungle sound".

Ellington'south early on theme vocal Due east St. Louis Toodle-Oo is a skilful instance of this manner of playing. When the Hollywood Club reopened in the spring of 1925 information technology was renamed the Kentucky Lodge. The band then became known as Knuckles Ellington and his Kentucky Club Orchestra although they also continued to tape as the Washingtonians up until 1929.

Cherry-red Hot Jazz Archive

Redhotjazz.com was a pioneering website during the "Information wants to be Free" era of the 1990s. In that spirit we are recovering the lost data from the at present defunct site and sharing information technology with you.
Most of the music in the archive is in the course of MP3s hosted on Archive.org or the French servers of Jazz-on-line.com where this music is all in the public domain.
Files unavailable from those sources we host ourselves. They were made from original 78 RPM records in the hands of private collectors in the 1990s who contributed to the original redhotjazz.com. They were hosted every bit .ra files originally and we have converted them into the more modern MP3 format. They are of junior quality to what is bachelor commercially and are intended for reference purposes just. In some cases a Real Audio (.ra) file from Archive.org will download. Don't be scared! Those files will play in many music programs, but not Windows Media Actor.
